Belarus President warns against ‘unjustified’ price raises

LUNINETS, 25 April (BelTA) – In a critical time it is inadmissible to capitalize on people by raising prices without justification, said President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko as he visited the supermarket Zapadny in the town of Luninets on 25 April. The shop was opened in 2010. Last year the monthly retail trade averaged over Br593 million. The head of state asked about the choice of commodities, an increase in prices for food, correlation between domestic and foreign commodities in the shop, the operation of the entire system of consumer cooperation shops. The President was informed that the price increase had affected imported commodities more than domestic ones. Belarus-made goods accounted for 89% of the shop’s choice of commodities. The shop offers over 15,000 commodities. The President was informed that the Luninets District Consumer Cooperative Society is the top performer in the consumer cooperation system of the oblast. Last year retail branch of the district consumer cooperation system earned Br2.8 billion in net profit. Alexander Lukashenko was on the whole pleased with retail practices in the town of Luninets and the shop in particular. He said that local authorities should keep an eye on prices and prevent their unwarranted increases.
