The volume of reconstruction of power lines in Belarus will be virtually doubled in 2021-2025. Belarusian Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich made the statement as he met with workers of the peat briquette plant OAO TBZ Lyakhovichsky, the Energy Ministry press service told BelTA.

As much as 1,700km of high-voltage power lines have been built or rebuilt ahead of the forthcoming commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The accomplishment will allow transmitting the electricity the nuclear power plant will generate to all parts of the country.

Viktor Karankevich noted it is necessary to continue this work in order to allow households and businesses use more electricity. The modernization of electric infrastructure will be in focus for the next five years. Plans have been made to virtually double the power grid reconstruction volume. “While we reconstruct about 1,500-1,700km of power lines at present, the figure will have to reach 2,700km by 2022-2023,” he said.

It will offer more opportunities for connecting households to the power grid for the sake of heating and hot water supply. The effort will also greatly improve the reliability of the electric infrastructure. Close attention will be paid to the introduction of modern digital technologies.

The official also mentioned that the total length of power lines in Belarus is close to 280,000km.

During the meeting with the workers Viktor Karankevich talked about the main directions of development of the energy industry, key results of its modernization, and spoke at length about matters of current interest for the peat industry. The energy minister also answered questions concerning electricity rates, which are designed to encourage electricity consumption, questions concerning the development of electric transport, opportunities for expanding the use of peat products in the housing and utilities system and the cement industry.
