Belarus, Syria to cooperate in industry

MINSK, 26 July (BelTA) – Belarus and Syria are approaching a level of industrial cooperation, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said in an interview with Syria’s Al-Watan newspaper, BelTA has learnt. The two countries have recently made considerable progress in economic cooperation, Alexander Lukashenko said. Syria has become one of the major markets for Belarus’ trucks in the non-CIS states. Since 2001, Belarus sold about 5,000 MAZ vehicles in Syria. Belarus started exporting metal, devices and equipment, tires, synthetic fiber, milk powder and other products to Syria and importing Syria’s phosphates and aluminum strap alongside with traditional imports of fruits and vegetables. The sides have started working on a series of ambitious projects in machine building. The two countries have plans to construct facilities to assemble trucks, buses, and other machinery to Belarusian technologies, which can be exported to the neighboring states. “In other words, we are approaching industrial cooperation which will bring our countries even closer. These projects go beyond simple commercial deals, they require compromises and out-of-the-box solutions,” the President said. To facilitate the bilateral cooperation, the two countries need to optimize trade routes to reduce delivery costs and to streamline trading legislation to offer more mutual trade concessions and preferences, Alexander Lukashenko added. “We can achieve all this. What matters most is that we have a will for that,” the Belarusian President underlined.
