Building nuclear power plant in Belarus named strategic task

Building a nuclear power plant is a real prospect, a strategic task Belarus will not abandon, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko told a session of the Security Council of the Republic of Belarus on January 15. The session tabled the development of nuclear power engineering in the country. “It is time for us to once more analyse all pros and cons, consider all things and take a fundamental political decision concerning the necessity of developing nuclear power engineering in Belarus,” said the President. In his words, the decision is historical, as it will determine the economic, energy and political independence of future generations of Belarusians. “Today we lay the foundation of the operation of the Belarusian state while the problem of the planet’s depleting hydrocarbons is getting more acute. I believe future generations will appreciate our decision,” said Alexander Lukashenko. The head of state emphasised, Belarus is starting building its own nuclear power plant, developing its nuclear project while complicated and contradictory tendencies are progressing on the global nuclear energy market. “Since everyone rushed to build such reactors and due to the deficit and high prices for hydrocarbon stock, projects for developing proprietary nuclear power engineering become quite attractive and it also leads to soaring prices for nuclear fuel,” noted the head of state. Getting atomic fuel is a serious issue today and it should be dealt with, as the global demand for uranium raw stock is close to speculative, he added.
