Creation of agro-towns in Belarus to complete this five-year term

CHERIKOV REGION, 26 April (BelTA) – The creation of agro-towns in Belarus will complete this five-year term, said President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko as he visited the agro-town Yezery, Cherikov Region, Mogilev Oblast, on 26 April. By the end of the five-year term Belarus will have over 1,500 agro-towns. In the future major villages, which are located near agro-towns, will be put in order. The President remarked that in the next five-year term efforts will be mainly focused on building up the country’s manufacturing. The agro-town Yezery was Belarus’ first agro-town. The head of state remarked that he likes exactly such agro-towns, which have preserved the spirit of the countryside. In addition, they now offer everything for comfortable life: a shop, a kindergarten, a school, a household services center. According to the President, in Belarus the share of people living in the countryside stands at 30% while the world’s figure is as low as 6%. “I would like to preserve the 30% of rural residents. We need to preserve villages, it is our key task”. Talking to the residents, Alexander Lukashenko said he is confident the money had not been wasted and lands had been revived. The head of state was told that the sickness rate in children in the Cherikov Region is 30% lower than that in the oblast, the sickness rate in adults – 20% lower. Over the last five years only one case of [radionuclide-] polluted milk was registered (in 2006). The radioactive pollution of lands tends to drop. In some areas efforts are exercised to put lands back into crop rotation. The head of state got familiar with the development of the social sphere in the agro-town and the region, measures taken to alleviate consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe. Alexander Lukashenko visited the Cherikov branch of the children’s Olympic sports reserve school that trains future biathletes. Every year students of this school win various oblast and national competitions. One of them is Vladimir Chepelin, bronze winner of the 2009 world biathlon championship. Alexander Lukashenko also visited the Yezery kindergarten and talked to the staff and children. The head of state presented sports equipment sets to the sports school and toys to the kindergarten.
