MINSK, 29 March (BelTA) - A Belarusian delegation headed by the country’s permanent representative in the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva Mikhail Khvostov is attending the 64th session of the UN Economic Commission for Europe. The session opened in Geneva on 29 March, BelTA learnt from the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.
During the three-day meeting the delegates will consider the impact of the global economic crisis on the region and new challenges primarily in energy and transport. The delegates will discuss the role of regional integration for sustainable development and ways to improve the infrastructure for international trade.
The Belarusian delegation will actively participate in the discussion of the agenda and share experiences in creating an enabling environment for cargo haulage.
The UNECE was founded in 1947 and has 56 member states of Europe, Central Asia and also the United States and Canada. The main purpose of the organization is to promote economic cooperation in Europe, strengthen regional integration, economic and trade ties between the countries. The UNECE holds sessions every two years. During the session the commission decides on the strategic areas of its activities in the coming years.
Belarus is a member of the UNECE since its inception in 1947 and actively cooperates with the commission in all its areas of activity: economic integration, transport, ecology, statistics, land use, housing policy, energy.
