Belarusian government, IMF mission discussing economy stabilization

MINSK, 6 June (BelTA) – Vice Premier of Belarus Sergei Rumas and the IMF mission in Belarus are discussing matters relating to the stabilization of the Belarusian economy, BelTA has learned. “I would like to discuss how the situation in Belarus is developing, what has changed since the previous mission,” he said. Sergei Rumas told IMF representatives: “You know that on Saturday the EurAsEC Anticrisis Fund made a positive decision. I even know that you have the matrix that Belarus and the anticrisis fund have signed and two letters that are bundled with the matrix”. The Vice Premier wondered whether the IMF believes the measures the matrix outlines are sufficient. It would be desirable to learn whether the IMF shares the views on the measures that Belarus and the anticrisis fund have agreed on, said Sergei Rumas. He added that he was ready to give answers to all questions regarding the measures the Belarusian government is taking to stabilize the consumer market and the currency market. An IMF mission is supposed to work in Minsk on 1-14 June. Consultations regarding the current action plan of the government and the National Bank are in progress. During the mission’s stay in Minsk the sides are expected to discuss the present economic situation, the measures the government and the National Bank are taking to stabilize the domestic currency market. The possibility of the IMF’s support for the country’s macroeconomic policy will be determined. The Belarusian government and the National Bank sent a request for a stabilization loan to the International Monetary Fund on 31 May. Prime Minister of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich said earlier that Belarus expects to receive $3.5-8 billion as part of a new IMF program.
