Lukashenko: I don’t see proper opposition in Belarus

MINSK, 18 April (BelTA) – There is no proper opposition in Belarus, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko told media on 16 April. In response to claims that the President of Belarus is intent on destroying its opposition in the country, Alexander Lukashenko said: “It is total nonsense. To tell you the truth: I am too confident and too proud. I will not let myself look at this scum using these methods”. In particular, the head of state said that in order to be his enemy, one has to reach his level. “Why do you mock common people? Why do you scare them? If you want to take me head-on, let’s play football, ice hockey, let’s jump, fight, duel if we have to. Why do you yap for the sake of foreign money, gutting the society?” said Alexander Lukashenko. “I don’t see proper opposition in the country. Do you think a responsible politician, who is one of the opposition and is eager to grab the power, can let himself drop some unverified statement? I was like them myself. I was afraid of saying something I couldn’t prove,” said the head of state. In response to appeals of several opposition politicians to introduce sanctions against Belarus, the President said: “These are not against Lukashenko, these are against the nation”. “It is their business. They have to earn money,” he said. “Today they are fighting to nominate the leader. There is no so-called new wave. The ones we see – Bogdankevich, Kozulin and the rest like Lebedko, who I’ve released from prison as Romanchuk asked me to – are scumbags. You should be thankful that the president has released you from prison. Are they proper opposition?” said Alexander Lukashenko. “There are also militants and we know them. Particularly Young Front members and other unregistered organizations. We will put them in their proper place in line with the law,” said the head of state. “It is likely or even definite that me and you will have to live with a new president. I don’t want things to be like that then, not even now when one cannot speak up,” said the President.
